Weight management

You really can eat more and weigh less "Our studies show that eating a diet low in calorie density helps people eat fewer calories while still eating a satisfying amount of food. Several of our studies have looked at the best ways to include low-calorie-dense foods in a meal. We found, for example, that eating a 100-calorie bowl of broth-based soup or a green salad at the start of a meal takes the edge off your hunger. Even with the extra course of soup or salad, you are likely to eat fewer total calories during the meal.. … Another effective approach is to add vegetables to your favorite mixed dishes — bulk up chili, stews and even macaroni and cheese with water-rich veggies like broccoli, carrots or tomatoes. Our studies show that you are likely to eat the same portion of food as usual and will be satisfied with fewer calories because some of the space in the bowl is taken up by low-calorie-dense vegetables."

JOURNAL ARTICLES:

A role for fruit content in energy-restricted diets in improving antioxidant status in obese women during weight loss (Nutrition 2006) "A fruit-enriched hypocaloric diet appears to be more effective against oxidative stress. Consumption of antioxidant substances contained in fruit could be a useful strategy in the design of hypocaloric diets that, with the weight reduction, could increase the improvement of cardiovascular risk factors related to obesity."

Calcium and dairy intakes in relation to long-term weight gain in US men (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 2006)

Consumption of Whole-Grain Cereals during Weight Loss: Effects on Dietary Quality, Dietary Fiber, Magnesium, Vitamin B-6, and Obesity. (J Am Diet Assoc. 2006) "CONCLUSIONS: Weight-reduction strategies may be associated with reduced intake of micronutrients, such as calcium and vitamin E. However, a hypocaloric diet with fiber-rich whole-grain cereal is effective for improving or maintaining other aspects of dietary quality during weight loss."

Diet in the management of weight loss. (CMAJ. 2006) "Given the burden of disease associated with obesity, treatment is crucial for reducing secondary risks. Patients often consult their physicians about diet, yet many physicians are unfamiliar with the evidence for the use of various weight-loss regimens. The purpose of this article is to review and assess types of diets commonly recommended for weight reduction, with particular attention to low-calorie and low-carbohydrate diets."

Dietary and physical activity behaviors among adults successful at weight loss maintenance. (Int J Behav Nutr Phys Act. 2006) "CONCLUSION: Self-monitoring strategies such as weighing oneself, planning meals, tracking fat and calories, exercising 30 or more minutes daily, and/or adding physical activity to daily routine may be important in successful weight loss maintenance. Leisure-time activities such as lifting weights or cooking/baking for fun are common strategies reported by those who were successful weight losers."

Does Dieting Lead to Weight Gain? A Four-Year Longitudinal Study of Middle School Girls. (Obesity (Silver Spring). 2006)

Effect of 6-Month Calorie Restriction on Biomarkers of Longevity, Metabolic Adaptation, and Oxidative Stress in Overweight Individuals (JAMA. 2006) "Conclusions Our findings suggest that 2 biomarkers of longevity (fasting insulin level and body temperature) are decreased by prolonged calorie restriction in humans and support the theory that metabolic rate is reduced beyond the level expected from reduced metabolic body mass. Studies of longer duration are required to determine if calorie restriction attenuates the aging process in humans."

Low-Carbohydrate Diets (Am Fam Physician 2006)

One year of caloric restriction in humans: feasibility and effects on body composition and abdominal adipose tissue. ( Gerontol A Biol Sci Med Sci. 2006) "CONCLUSIONS: CR for 1 year was feasible, but the level of CR achieved was less than prescribed. CR and exercise were equally effective in reducing weight and adiposity."

Popular weight reduction diets. (J Cardiovasc Nurs. 2006)

Portion distortion: typical portion sizes selected by young adults. (Am Diet Assoc. 2006) "CONCLUSIONS: Portion distortion seems to affect the portion sizes selected by young adults for some foods. This phenomenon has the potential to hinder weight loss, weight maintenance, and/or health improvement efforts. Thus, to ensure more effective nutrition counseling, food and nutrition professionals must develop ways to "undistort" what clients perceive to be typical portion sizes and help them recognize what is an appropriate amount to eat at a single eating occasion."

Reductions in portion size and energy density of foods are additive and lead to sustained decreases in energy intake (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition)
