Fibromyalgia

General Information

NEWS:

Psychiatric ills common in adults with fibromyalgia "In a study of 336 adults with and without fibromyalgia, researchers found that those with the condition were substantially more likely to have ever had depression, bipolar disorder or an anxiety disorder. They also had higher rates of eating disorders and substance abuse problems. In most cases, the psychiatric condition preceded the development of fibromyalgia, making it unlikely that the mood disturbances were simply a reaction to having chronic pain. … Fibromyalgia is a syndrome marked by widespread aches and pains, fatigue and sleep problems, among other symptoms; the cause is unknown, and there are no medications specifically approved for the condition. Treatment usually involves a combination of approaches, such as painkillers, antidepressants, behavioral therapy or exercise therapy."

Fibromyalgia is a neuropathic pain syndrome.

JOURNAL ARTICLES:

Chronic widespread pain and its comorbidities: a population-based study. (Arch Intern Med. 2006) "BACKGROUND: Chronic widespread pain (CWP), the cardinal symptom of fibromyalgia, is prevalent and co-occurs with numerous symptom-based conditions such as chronic fatigue syndrome, joint pain, headache, irritable bowel syndrome, and psychiatric disorders. … "

Comorbidity of Fibromyalgia and Psychiatric Disorders. (J Clin Psychiatry. 2006) "CONCLUSIONS: There is substantial lifetime psychiatric comorbidity in individuals with fibromyalgia. These results have important clinical and theoretical implications, including the possibility that fibromyalgia might share underlying pathophysiologic links with some psychiatric disorders."

Creating meaning in fibromyalgia syndrome. (Soc Sci Med. 2006)

Daily fatigue in women with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and fibromyalgia. (Pain. 2006) "Daily pain was associated with increased fatigue in all groups, although OA patients showed less pain reactivity than either FMS or RA patients. These findings indicate that fatigue is a common feature of rheumatologic conditions. Nonetheless, there are important differences between RA, OA, and FM patients in both the everyday manifestations and the biopsychosocial correlates of fatigue."

Factors That Affect the Number of Tender Points in Fibromyalgia and Chronic Widespread Pain Patients Who Did not Meet the ACR 1990 Criteria for Fibromyalgia: Are Tender Points a Reflection of Neuropathic Pain? (Semin Arthritis Rheum. 2006) "CONCLUSIONS: CWP patients have symptoms similar to FM patients, though less severe. The most important factor that affects the criteria for fulfilling the number TP in CWP patients is the neuropathic pain score, which suggests that FM is primarily a neuropathic pain syndrome."

Female fibromyalgia patients: Lower resting metabolic rates than matched healthy controls. (Med Sci Monit. 2006)

Fibromyalgia: aetiology, diagnosis, symptoms and management. (r J Nurs. 2006) "Fibromyalgia is believed to affect about 2% of the UK population, predominantly women, and is characterized by the symptoms of widespread musculoskeletal pain, persistent fatigue, non-refreshing sleep and generalized stiffness. It is also accompanied by a variety of associated symptoms which can appear baffling to both patient and doctor alike."

Pain thresholds and tender point counts as predictors of new chronic widespread pain in psychologically distressed subjects. (Ann Rheum Dis. 2006)

Prevalence of fibromyalgia syndrome in migraine patients. (Cephalalgia. 2006) "A high incidence of FMS was found among female migraine patients but not in males. The coexistence of FMS should be considered when choosing a prophylactic migraine therapy."

Reduced responsiveness is an essential feature of chronic fatigue syndrome: A fMRI study. (BMC Neurol. 2006)

Relationship between sexual dysfunction and psychiatric status in premenopausal women with fibromyalgia. (Urology. 2006)

The high frequency of manic symptoms in fibromyalgia does influence the choice of treatment? (Clin Pract Epidemol Ment Health. 2006)

The incidence of fibromyalgia and its associated comorbidities: a population-based retrospective cohort study based on International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision codes. (J Clin Rheumatol. 2006) "Patients with fibromyalgia were 2.14 to 7.05 times more likely to have one or more of the following comorbid conditions: depression, anxiety, headache, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, and rheumatoid arthritis."

Vitamin D deficiency is associated with anxiety and depression in fibromyalgia. (Clin Rheumatol. 2006) "Vitamin D deficiency is common in fibromyalgia and occurs more frequently in patients with anxiety and depression. The nature and direction of the causal relationship remains unclear, but there are definite implications for long-term bone health."

Young women with fibromyalgia in the United States and Sweden: Perceived difficulties during the first year after diagnosis. (Disabil Rehabil. 2006)
