Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

Diagnosis, Imaging, and Screening

NEWS:

Acid Reflux Doesn’t Always Mean Heartburn "Researchers at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston collected data from patients who were brought to an emergency room complaining of chest pain. After measuring pH levels in the esophagus, they found 57 percent of the patients studied had acid levels that could be classified as GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)."

Improved diagnosis of gastro-oesophageal reflux in patients with unexplained chronic cough. (Aliment Pharmacol Ther. 2007) "Conclusion A positive association between cough and weakly acidic reflux was found in a significant subgroup of patients with unexplained chronic cough. Impedance-pH-manometry identified patients in whom cough can be related to reflux that would have been disregarded using the standard diagnostic criteria for acid reflux."

Observation of gastro-esophageal reflux by MRI: a feasibility study. (Abdom Imaging. 2007) ”CONCLUSION: Esophageal MR fluoroscopy may be a useful diagnostic tool for GERD for its ability to show GER, even in patients with no mucosal injury, and for suggesting the cause of the reflux."

Prevalence of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Symptoms and Uninvestigated Dyspepsia in Korea: A Population-Based Study. (Dig Dis Sci. 2007) "Of all subjects, 7.1% reported that GERD symptoms were present at least once a week, and 3.8% at least twice a week."

The utility of ambulatory pH monitoring in patients presenting with chronic cough and asthma. (Can J Gastroenterol. 2007) "CONCLUSIONS: The data of the present study support the observation that there is a high prevalence of GERD in patients with asthma or chronic cough. The use of different pH parameters for detecting acid reflux during 24 h ambulatory pH monitoring, such as proximal esophageal acid measurement, should be considered as part of the routine interpretation of such testing. A low threshold for diagnosing GERD in patients with asthma or chronic cough is essential, because respiratory and/or reflux symptoms can be absent or atypical in some of these patients."

Unrecognized GERD Symptoms Are Associated with Excessive Daytime Sleepiness in Patients Undergoing Sleep Studies. (Dig Dis Sci. 2007) "We conclude that unrecognized and untreated GERD are present in many patients presenting with sleep disorders. Patients with GERD had significantly greater sleepiness."
