Simple steps can relieve acid reflux symptoms " Most doctors recommend lifestyle and dietary changes, along with medication. In some cases, surgery may be needed to relieve GERD symptoms. Lifestyle measures include eating smaller portions, avoiding late-night eating, sitting upright two to three hours after a meal, wearing loose-fitting clothes, losing weight, avoiding alcohol and cigarettes and elevating one's head in bed 6 to 8 inches. Obesity, smoking and alcohol are risk factors. Medications such as ibuprofen or aspirin also can play a role. And certain foods are thought to trigger GERD. Some of these include: • Citrus fruits • Chocolate • Drinks with caffeine • Fatty and fried foods • Garlic and onions • Mint flavorings • Spicy foods • Tomato-based foods such as spaghetti sauce and chili.
