Ankylosing SpondylitisGeneral InformationNEWS:ARTICLES:Ankylosing Spondylitis: An Update From EULAR 2007 JOURNAL ARTICLES:Definition of disease duration in ankylosing spondylitis. (Rheumatol Int. 2007) Osteoporosis and vertebral fractures in ankylosing spondylitis. (Curr Opin Rheumatol. 2007) "RECENT FINDINGS: Osteoporosis and fractures of the vertebral body and its dorsal arch are now well recognized features in patients with ankylosing spondylitis, but their diagnosis is still often a challenge. The risk factors and clinical consequences for fractures in ankylosing spondylitis are increasingly understood in the context of osteoimmunology and of spinal biomechanical changes in material and structural components in the spine that result in bone failure." Serum oxidative-antioxidative status in patients with ankylosing spondilitis. (Rheumatol Int. 2007) "The results of this study indicated that increased oxidant and decreased antioxidant capacity may be associated with the pathogenesis of AS." Sexual problems in male ankylosing spondylitis patients: relationship with functionality, disease activity, quality of life, and emotional status. (Clin Rheumatol. 2007) "Sexual problems are common in AS patients and might usually be associated with joint involvement, decreased functionality, increased disease activity, decreased health quality, and depression. Therefore, while examining AS patients and managing their treatments, special attention must be given to all domains of life instead of only physical problems." The Assessment of Ankylosing Spondylitis in Clinical Practice (Nat Clin Pract Rheumatol. 2007) "Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory arthritis that predominantly affects the axial skeleton in adolescent patients causing spinal pain and stiffness. There is a marked delay, on average 8 years, between onset of disease symptoms and clinical diagnosis. The distinction between the symptoms of mechanical and inflammatory back pain remains one of the main contributing factors for the delay in diagnosis. Several classification criteria exist to aid the diagnosis of AS, but their accuracy is poor. The Ankylosing Spondylitis Assessment Study group (ASAS) has defined a core set of domains for clinical outcome measurement in AS in order to assess the disease process in individual patients and to identify those with rapidly progressive disease. New therapies, such as the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors, have transformed the treatment paradigm in AS, especially for those patients with aggressive disease." |
