Drug Side-Effects and Interactions

Systematic Review: Comparative Effectiveness and Harms of Disease-Modifying Medications for Rheumatoid Arthritis (Annals 2007)

Pericarditis: a rare complication of methotrexate therapy. (Clin Rheumatol. 2007)

Drugs

Etanercept: a review of its use in the management of rheumatoid arthritis. (Drugs. 2007)

Intensive treatment with methotrexate in early rheumatoid arthritis: aiming for remission. Computer Assisted Management in Early Rheumatoid Arthritis(CAMERA). (Ann Rheum Dis. 2007)

Changes in priorities for improvement in patients with rheumatoid arthritis during one year of anti-TNF treatment. (Ann Rheum Dis. 2007) "CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that, at the group level, patients' priorities for improvement are fairly stable during 12 months of anti-TNF therapy, despite major improvements in health status. Although pain reduction becomes somewhat less important, it remains the most frequently selected priority. Individual patient priorities are not stable over the course of treatment and appear to be associated with differences in disease state."

Studying the benefit/risk ratio of glucocorticoids in rheumatoid arthritis.

Do rheumatoid arthritis patients in clinical practice benefit from switching from infliximab to a second tumor necrosis factor alpha inhibitor? (Ann Rheum Dis. 2007)

Effects of clarithromycin in patients with active rheumatoid arthritis. (Curr Med Res Opin. 2007)

No erosive progression revealed by MRI in rheumatoid arthritis patients treated with etanercept, even in patients with persistent MRI and clinical signs of joint inflammation. (Clin Rheumatol. 2007)

Effects of glucocorticoids on radiological progression in rheumatoid arthritis. (Cochrane Database Syst Rev. 2007) " CONCLUSIONS: Even in the most conservative estimate, the evidence that glucocorticoids given in addition to standard therapy can substantially reduce the rate of erosion progression in rheumatoid arthritis is convincing. There remains concern about potential long-term adverse reactions to glucocorticoid therapy, such as increased cardiovascular risk, and this issue requires further research."

Exercise

Is dynamic exercise beneficial in patients with rheumatoid arthritis? (Joint Bone Spine. 2007)

Predictors of exercise and effects of exercise on symptoms, function, aerobic fitness, and disease outcomes of rheumatoid arthritis. (Arthritis Rheum. 2007) "CONCLUSION: This study supported the positive effects of exercise on walk time and grip strength, and demonstrated that fatigue and perceived benefits/barriers to exercise influenced exercise participation. Furthermore, overall symptoms of fatigue, pain, and depression were positively influenced in this selective group of patients with RA ages 40-70 years."

More walking could benefit people with arthritis "People suffering from rheumatoid arthritis tend to walk less than other people, but their heart health would improve if they'd spent more time walking, according to a new report. Physical inactivity and sedentary behavior contribute to the risk of cardiovascular disease, the authors explain in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatism, but little is known about energy expenditure from lifestyle physical activity in arthritis patients."

Cardiovascular risk factors, fitness and physical activity in rheumatic diseases. (Current Opinion in Rheumatology 2007) "Summary: As part of the effort to prevent vascular comorbidity, regular exercise should be encouraged in patients with rheumatic diseases, and structured interventions to reduce adverse lifestyle factors scientifically evaluated."

Comparison of treatment strategies in early rheumatoid arthritis: a randomized trial. (Ann Intern Med. 2007)

The complexity of care for patients with rheumatoid arthritis: metrics for better understanding chronic disease care. (Med Care. 2007) " CONCLUSION: Patients with RA have frequent encounters with multiple providers and also frequent discontinuity of care. Recognizing the complexity of the care of patients with a chronic disease across multiple dimensions provides an opportunity to better understand challenges and opportunities in delivering high quality care."

Nutrition

Mediterranean diet may benefit arthritis sufferers "The traditional diets of people in the Mediterranean region tend to be high in fruits, vegetables, fish and olive oil, and comparatively low in red meat. A number of studies have linked this style of eating to a lower risk of heart disease, but there has also been some evidence that it's beneficial for people with rheumatoid arthritis, or RA."
