Asthma risk 'rises in menopause'

Atlanta Named 2007 "Asthma Capital"

Children with asthma have more emotional problems "Using data from a national health survey, researchers found that of more than 100,000 U.S. children and teenagers, those with asthma were more likely to be diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression, anxiety and learning disabilities."

How Is Asthma Related To Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease?

Not Just a Day at the Beach for People With Asthma "Before you run to the beach for the day of fun, you may want to check out the red tide toxin levels. A new study reveals high numbers of the tiny organisms making up the red tide can cause problems for people with asthma. Researchers from the University of Miami report annual red tides may cause asthma patients to experience a significant increase in symptoms. The tiny algae, Karena brevis, periodically swell in numbers along the Gulf of Mexico coast. The organisms give the water a reddish hue and release potent toxins, called brevetoxins, in the water and the air."

Uncontrolled Asthma Common Among US Adults "Among asthmatics classified as intermittent, 65% had uncontrolled asthma at least once during the study, whereas 83%, 87%, and 89% of patients with mild, moderate, or severe persistent asthma, respectively, experienced uncontrolled asthma at least once."

An association between asthma and BMI in adolescents: results from the California Healthy Kids Survey. (J Asthma. 2007) “The results suggest that weight reduction even among persons not classified as overweight or obese may be an important component of asthma management.”

Associations between home dampness and presence of molds with asthma and allergic symptoms among young children in the tropics. (Pediatr Allergy Immunol. 2007) "Indoor dampness and mold in children's bedroom are important risk factors associated with allergic symptoms in young children in Singapore."

Asthma and allergies in schoolchildren of Maputo (Allergy 2007) "The prevalence of current asthma was 13.3% in the two groups, the prevalence of rhinoconjuctivitis and eczema was 23% and 10% in teenagers and 8.8% and 8.5% respectively in children 6–7 years old. Overall, 35% of the adolescents and 23.8% of children were found to have at least one atopic condition or asthma in the last year."

Asthma and atypical bacterial infection. (Chest. 2007) “A growing body of basic and clinical science implicates the atypical bacterial pathogens Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Chlamydophila (formerly Chlamydia) pneumoniae as potentially important factors in asthma, although their exact contribution to asthma development and/or persistence remains to be determined. Evidence from human studies links both M pneumoniae and C pneumoniae to new-onset wheezing, exacerbations of prevalent asthma, and long-term decrements in lung function, suggesting that these organisms can play an important role in the natural history of asthma.”

Asthma and food allergy. (Curr Opin Pulm Med. 2008)

Asthma Prevalence, Family Size, and Birth Order (CHEST. 2007) "Conclusions: In families with four or more children, asthma prevalence is inversely related to the number of children in the family. Asthma prevalence is similar for all birth orders. The similar asthma prevalence for all birth orders challenges the hygiene hypothesis as the mechanism for the decreased asthma prevalence in large families."

Autism Spectrum Disorders in Children with Seizures in the First Year of Life—A Population-Based Study (Epilepsia 2007)

Characterisation of asthma among adults with and without childhood farm contact. (Eur Respir J. 2007) "Our study confirms using objective measurements that farm subjects have a lower prevalence of symptoms and asthma diagnosis while the prevalence of BHR does not differ."

Childhood asthma and environmental interventions. (Environ Health Perspect. 2007)

Duration of asthma and lung function in life-long nonsmoking adults. (J Investig Allergol Clin Immunol. 2007)

Effect of Indoor Mold Concentrations on Daily Symptom Severity of Children with Asthma and/or Rhinitis Monosensitized to Molds. (J Asthma. 2007)

Excessive body weight is associated with additional loss of quality of life in children with asthma. (J Allergy Clin Immunol. 2007) "CONCLUSION: Excessive body weight is associated with an additional decrease in quality of life in children with asthma. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Clinicians should be aware of the interaction between asthma and excessive body weight and the effect on quality of life and should give extra attention to children with both conditions."

Food allergy and asthma morbidity in children. (Pediatr Pulmonol. 2007) "CONCLUSION: Peanut and milk allergies were associated with increased hospitalization and steroid use and may serve as early markers for increased asthma morbidity."

Food allergy as a risk factor for asthma morbidity in adults. ( Asthma. 2007 ) "Conclusions. Self-reported allergy to foods was associated with worse outcomes, suggesting that food allergy may be a risk factor for increased asthma morbidity in adults."

Food Intolerance and Childhood Asthma: What is the Link? (Paediatr Drugs. 2007)

Menstrual irregularity and asthma and lung function. (J Allergy Clin Immunol. 2007)

Mental disorders among adults with asthma: results from the World Mental Health Survey. (Gen Hosp Psychiatry. 2007) "CONCLUSION: This first cross-national study of the relationship between asthma and mental disorders confirms that a range of common mental disorders occurs with greater frequency among persons with asthma. These results attest to the importance of clinicians in diverse settings being alert to the co-occurrence of these conditions."

Nickel Sensitivity in Asthma Patients. (J Asthma. 2007)

Predictors of acute care in adult asthmatics: A prospective HMO-based study. (Chest. 2007) "Of the four potentially modifiable risk factors identified, current cigarette smoke exposure (RR 1.6) and ownership and skin prick test positivity to cat or dog (RR 1.5) were the most significant."

Prevalence and severity of symptoms of asthma, allergic rhinitis, and eczema in 10- to 15-year-old schoolchildren in central Taiwan. (Asian Pac J Allergy Immunol. 2007)

Prevalence of Asthma and Wheeze in Relation to Passive Smoking in Japanese Children. (Ann Epidemiol. 2007) "CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggested that environmental tobacco smoke might be associated with an increased prevalence of wheeze and asthma in Japanese children."

Prevalence of asthma-like symptoms in young children. (Pediatr Pulmonol. 2007) "CONCLUSIONS: Recurrent days with cough, wheeze or breathlessness in preschool children represents a major cause of morbidity in preschool children despite current treatment. There is a striking lack of international consensus on diagnosis and treatment. This uncontrolled morbidity highlights a significant unmet clinical need in preschool children."

[Prevalence of childhood asthma in Baranya County, Hungary: two surveys over 3 years.] (Orv Hetil. 2007)

Prevalence of symptoms of asthma, rhinitis and eczema in 13- to 14-year-old children in Africa: the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood Phase III (Allergy 2007) "Several centres, including Cape Town (20.3%), Polokwane (18.0%), Reunion Island (21.5%), Brazzaville (19.9%), Nairobi (18.0%), Urban Ivory Coast (19.3%) and Conakry (18.6%) showed relatively high asthma symptom prevalences, similar to those in western Europe. There were also a number of centres showing high symptom prevalences for allergic rhinoconjunctivitis (Cape Town, Reunion Island, Brazzaville, Eldoret, Urban Ivory Coast, Conakry, Casablanca, Wilays of Algiers, Sousse and Eldoret) and eczema (Brazzaville, Eldoret, Addis Ababa, Urban Ivory Coast, Conakry, Marrakech and Casablanca)."

Prevalence of symptoms of childhood asthma, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema in the Pacific: The International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) (Allergy 2007) "The finding that prevalence levels are generally considerably lower than those in Pacific children in New Zealand adds to previous evidence that children who migrate experience an altered risk of asthma as a result of exposure to a new environment during childhood."

Recent evidence for adverse effects of residential proximity to traffic sources on asthma. (Curr Opin Pulm Med. 2008) “SUMMARY: There is consistent evidence that living near traffic sources is associated with asthma occurrence and exacerbations.”

Respiratory illnesses in early life and asthma and atopy in childhood. (J Allergy Clin Immunol. 2007) "CONCLUSION: The relationship between early-life respiratory illnesses and asthma and atopy is complex and likely dependent on the type of infection and immune response it initiates. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Certain respiratory illnesses in early life modify the risk of atopy and asthma at school age."

[Severe asthma.] (Presse Med. 2007)

Severe asthma in adults: What are the important questions? (J Allergy Clin Immunol. 2007)

The association between gastroesophageal reflux disease and asthma: a systematic review. (Gut. 2007)

The influence of cigarette smoking on adult asthma outcomes. (Nicotine Tob Res. 2007)

The natural history of asthma from childhood to adulthood. (Int J Clin Pract. 2007) "Features of childhood asthma such as severity, duration, atopy, bronchial hyperresponsiveness and exposure to smoking can predict the course of asthma into adulthood. Most children with mild intermittent asthma will outgrow their asthma, or have mild episodic asthma. Early commencement of anti-inflammatory therapy, such as inhaled corticosteroids may prevent the progression of the disease. Most patients with mild asthma have good functional outcome and low healthcare utilisation."

The relationship of asthma and rhinoconjunctivitis with obesity, exercise and Mediterranean diet in Spanish schoolchildren 6-7 years old. (Thorax. 2007) " CONCLUSIONS: These results support a potential protective effect of the Mediterranean diet in 6-7 year- old girls with CSA. Obesity is a risk factor for this type of asthma, only in girls."

The role of allergens in asthma. (Am Fam Physician. 2007) " … allergen avoidance may include removal of pets, use of high-efficiency particulate air filtration and vacuum cleaners, use of allergen-impermeable mattress and pillow covers, cockroach extermination, smoking cessation, and measures to control mold growth in the home. All allergen-specific treatment is dependent on defining sensitization. This can be achieved through serum assays of immunoglobulin E antibodies or skin tests with aeroallergens. Information on sensitization can be used to educate patients about the role of allergens in their symptoms, to provide avoidance advice, or to design immunotherapy."

The utility of ambulatory pH monitoring in patients presenting with chronic cough and asthma. (Can J Gastroenterol. 2007) "CONCLUSIONS: The data of the present study support the observation that there is a high prevalence of GERD in patients with asthma or chronic cough. The use of different pH parameters for detecting acid reflux during 24 h ambulatory pH monitoring, such as proximal esophageal acid measurement, should be considered as part of the routine interpretation of such testing. A low threshold for diagnosing GERD in patients with asthma or chronic cough is essential, because respiratory and/or reflux symptoms can be absent or atypical in some of these patients."
