JOURNAL ARTICLES:

Complications following spinal cord injury: occurrence and risk factors in a longitudinal study during and after inpatient rehabilitation. (J Rehabil Med. 2007) "Most subjects reported neurogenic and musculoskeletal pain, or had spasticity at each assessment. During the year after discharge, complications remained common: urinary tract infections and pressure sores affected 49% and 36% of the population, respectively. The degree of pain decreased, whereas the degree of spasticity increased significantly during inpatient rehabilitation. Overall, increased age, increased body mass index, traumatic lesion, tetraplegia, and complete lesion all increased the risk of complications. CONCLUSION: Complications are common following spinal cord injury. They need specific attention after discharge from inpatient rehabilitation and within subpopulations."

Effects of circuit resistance training on fitness attributes and upper-extremity pain in middle-aged men with paraplegia. (Arch Phys Med Rehabil. 2007) "CONCLUSIONS: CRT improves muscle strength, endurance, and anaerobic power of middle-aged men with paraplegia while significantly reducing their shoulder pain."

Experience of rehabilitation following spinal cord injury: a meta-synthesis of qualitative findings. (Spinal Cord. 2007) "The findings of this review suggest that the most important dimension of rehabilitation for people with SCI is the calibre and vision of the rehabilitation staff."

MRSA in spinal cord injury: The effect on patient rehabilitation (Injury Extra 2007) "Conclusion: Our study indicates that MRSA colonisation in spinal injured patients can lead to longer hospital stay, delayed in admission to spinal care units, and development of pressure sores and further infection. These factors have adverse effects on patients rehabilitation. Isolation of MRSA positive patient results in decreased morale and depression. More resources are required to compact MRSA colonisation and subsequent clinical and psychological effects."
