NeuropathyDiagnosis, Imaging, and ScreeningNEWS:ARTICLES:JOURNAL ARTICLES:[Chronic polyneuropathy - evaluation and diagnosis.] (Tidsskr Nor Laegeforen. 2007) "All patients should undergo a routine investigation for the most common causes of polyneuropathy, such as diabetes, heredity, alcohol abuse, toxic medications and agents, symptoms of Sjogren's syndrome and renal failure. The following laboratory assessments should be done if the medical history proves negative: glucose, haemoglobin, leucocytes, thrombocytes, ESR, creatinin, ALAT, GT, vitamin B12, serum electrophoresis, TSH and thyroxin. If the routine investigation proves negative, a targeted approach based on clinical type and electrophysiological findings is recommended. The most common sensory type with slowly progressing, symmetric sensory symptoms beginning in the feet can often be classified as cryptogenic without further investigation. Polyneuropathies with subacute onset, progressive weakness, asymmetric symptoms, proximal weakness, selective involvement of sensory fibres or demyelinating pathology, or other organ manifestations, have different etiologies that necessitate individually focused investigations." Contribution of Nerve Biopsy to Unclassified Neuropathy (European Neurology 2007) "Conclusions: The contribution of nerve biopsy to the diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy was highest in acute and subacute asymmetric forms of neuropathy and lowest in chronic symmetric forms. The main indication for nerve biopsy remains the diagnosis of vasculitic neuropathy, a potentially treatable disorder." Differential diagnosis of atypical focal peripheral neuropathy: Case report. (Physiother Theory Pract. 2007) "Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most frequent form of focal peripheral neuropathy but is commonly misdiagnosed. The aim of this case report was to describe the differential diagnosis of CTS and atypical focal peripheral neuropathy in a 34-year-old female." Restless legs syndrome is frequently overlooked in patients being evaluated for polyneuropathies. (Eur J Neurol. 2007) "We conclude that RLS frequently presents with symptoms suggestive of peripheral neuropathy, and therefore, is often overlooked." [Sweat function evaluation for early diagnosis of diabetic peripheral neuropathy.] (Nan Fang Yi Ke Da Xue Xue Bao. 2007) Utility of Nerve Conduction Studies for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome by Family Medicine, Primary Care, and Internal Medicine Physicians (The Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine 2007) "Discussion: This study demonstrated that point-of-service NCS by FM/PCP/IM physicians for CTS was applied to appropriate patient subpopulations, was performed in accordance with evidence-based testing parameters, and generated relevant diagnostic outcomes." |
