Gingko Biloba

NEWS:

Ginkgo may not aid memory in healthy older adults "The popular herbal supplement ginkgo biloba may not do much for healthy older adults' memory, at least in the short term, a new study suggests. … Supplements can interact with each other or with any medication a person may be taking, and that possibility should be taken seriously, Carlson said. With ginkgo, the primary concern is its potential to interact with drugs or supplements that may "thin" the blood -- including aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, like ibuprofen and naproxen, as well as supplements like vitamin E and garlic. This is based on evidence from past research that ginkgo may interfere with the functioning of blood cells called platelets, which play a key role in clot formation; impaired platelet function could raise the risk of bleeding. "

Ginkgo biloba Extract Improves Coronary Blood Flow in Patients with Coronary Artery Disease: Role of Endothelium-Dependent Vasodilation. (Planta Med. 2007) "In summary, our data demonstrate that GBE treatment in CAD patients leads to an increase of LAD blood flow in MDPV, MSPV and DTVI, and the increase response might relate to the improved endothelium-dependent vasodilatory capacity."

Ginkgo biloba for cognitive impairment and dementia. (Cochrane Database Syst Rev. 2007) "AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS: Ginkgo biloba appears to be safe in use with no excess side effects compared with placebo. Many of the early trials used unsatisfactory methods, were small, and we cannot exclude publication bias. The evidence that Ginkgo has predictable and clinically significant benefit for people with dementia or cognitive impairment is inconsistent and unconvincing."

Ginkgo biloba leave extract: biological, medicinal, and toxicological effects. (J Environ Sci Health C Environ Carcinog Ecotoxicol Rev. 2007) "Ginkgo biloba leave extract is among the most widely sold herbal dietary supplements in the United States. Its purported biological effects include: scavenging free radical; lowering oxidative stress; reducing neural damages, reducing platelets aggregation; anti-inflammation; anti-tumor activities; and anti-aging. Clinically, it has been prescribed to treat CNS disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and cognitive deficits."
