Coenzyme Q10 in hypertension

JOURNAL ARTICLES:

Coenzyme Q treatment of neurodegenerative diseases of aging. (Mitochondrion. 2007) "The etiology of several neurodegenerative disorders is thought to involve impaired mitochondrial function and oxidative stress. Coenzyme Q-10 (CoQ(10)) acts both as an antioxidant and as an electron acceptor at the level of the mitochondria. In several animal models of neurodegenerative diseases including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Huntington's disease, and Parkinson's disease, CoQ(10) has shown beneficial effects."

CoEnzyme Q10 (Ubiquinone) - Monograph. (Altern Med Rev. 2007) "True deficiency states are rare but often present with severe health consequences. Numerous disease processes, linked to low levels of CoQ10, can benefit from CoQ10 supplementation including, cardiovascular disease, Parkinson's disease, muscular dystrophy, breast and other cancers, diabetes mellitus, male infertility, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), asthma, thyroid disorders, and periodontal disease."

CoEnzyme Q10 (Ubiquinone) - Monograph. (Altern Med Rev. 2007)

Coenzyme q10: a review of its promise as a neuroprotectant. (CNS Spectr. 2007)

Coenzyme Q, oxidative stress and aging. (Mitochondrion. 2007) "Ingestion of CoQ(10) results in the elevation of endogenous CoQ(9), the predominant homologue in mice and rats. In our studies, there was no indication of a discernable effect of CoQ(10) intake reflecting enhancement of mitochondrial respiratory activity, antioxidant capacity and pro-oxidant potentiation or prolongation of life span."

Coenzyme Q(10) in the treatment of hypertension: a meta-analysis of the clinical trials. (J Hum Hypertens. 2007) "We conclude that coenzyme Q(10) has the potential in hypertensive patients to lower systolic blood pressure by up to 17 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure by up to 10 mm Hg without significant side effects."

Effect of coenzyme q10 on myopathic symptoms in patients treated with statins. (Am J Cardiol. 2007) "In conclusion, results suggest that coenzyme Q10 supplementation may decrease muscle pain associated with statin treatment. Thus, coenzyme Q10 supplementation may offer an alternative to stopping treatment with these vital drugs."

Improvement in intestinal coenzyme q10 absorption by food intake. (Yakugaku Zasshi. 2007)

The antioxidant role of coenzyme Q. (Mitochondrion. 2007) "This compound is our only endogenously synthesized lipid soluble antioxidant, present in all membranes and exceeding both in amount and efficiency that of other antioxidants. The protective effect is extended to lipids, proteins and DNA mainly because of its close localization to the oxidative events and the effective regeneration by continuous reduction at all locations."
