NEWS:

Folate and bowel polyps "Folate may reduce rates of stroke and may slow the rate of decline in thinking and memory as we age, which is all good. It may also prevent bowel cancer if there's no tumour there already. But the worrying thing about folate supplementation in older people is that if you have the beginnings of a tumour - say in the bowel or prostate - folate could fuel its growth."

Folate Status in Women of Childbearing Age, by Race/Ethnicity --- United States, 1999--2000, 2001--2002, and 2003--2004 "The results of these comparisons indicated that median serum folate concentrations among nonpregnant women of childbearing age decreased 16% from 1999--2000 through 2003--2004, and RBC folate concentrations decreased 8%. All women of childbearing age who are capable of becoming pregnant should consume 400 µg of folic acid daily to reduce the occurrence of NTD-affected pregnancies (2)."

Folic Acid Lowers Blood Arsenic Levels in Bangladesh "A new study conducted in Bangladesh finds that folic acid supplements can dramatically lower blood arsenic levels in individuals chronically exposed to arsenic-contaminated drinking water. Arsenic is a toxic element that is naturally present in some soils and water. Arsenic-contaminated drinking water is currently a significant public health problem in at least 70 countries, including several developing countries and also parts of the United States. Chronic arsenic exposure is associated with increased risk for skin, liver and bladder cancers, skin lesions, cardiovascular disease, and other adverse health outcomes."

Folic Acid May Prevent Cleft Lip and Palate

Folic Acid May Slow Hearing Loss

Folic acid 'reduces stroke risks' "Folate is a water-soluble B vitamin that occurs naturally in food. Folic acid is the synthetic form of folate that is found in supplements and added to fortified foods Both folic acid and vitamin B12 are essential for good health and good levels can be achieved by eating a healthy, balanced diet. . Dr Peter Coleman of The Stroke Association cautioned: 'Supplementing the diet with folic acid may reduce the risk of stroke in certain individuals, but is not suitable for everybody, and could actually increase the risk of cardiovascular disease in some people.' 'We urge people to consult with their doctors before taking any supplements or medication with a view to reducing their risk of stroke.' "

Too much folate unhealthy for some seniors: study " Older people who are deficient in vitamin B12 may run the risk of developing anemia and cognitive impairment if they're getting too much folate, a new study shows. Studies have suggested that excess folate can mask or worsen vitamin B-12 deficiency, which is common among older people. Given that the US has been fortifying all enriched cereal-grain products with folate since 1998 in order to prevent pregnant women from having children with neural tube birth defects, it's possible that many people may be getting too much of the nutrient, researchers say."

Dietary Folate Intake, MTHFR Genetic Polymorphisms, and the Risk of Endometrial Cancer among Chinese Women. (Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev. 2007) "Our findings suggest that folate intake may decrease the risk of endometrial cancer and modify the effect of MTHFR polymorphisms on risk."

Effects of Folic Acid Supplementation on Hearing in Older Adults (Annals 2007) "Folic acid supplementation slowed the decline in hearing of the speech frequencies associated with aging in a population from a country without folic acid fortification of food. The effect requires confirmation, especially in populations from countries with folic acid fortification programs."

Relation of Higher Folate Intake to Lower Risk of Alzheimer Disease in the Elderly (Arch Neurol. 2007) "Conclusions Higher folate intake may decrease the risk of AD independent of other risk factors and levels of vitamins B6 and B12. These results require confirmation with clinical trials."

The Effects of Prenatal Use of Folic Acid and Other Dietary Supplements on Early Child Development. (Matern Child Health J. 2007) "CONCLUSIONS: Study results suggest that while prenatal folic acid supplementation may improve development at 3 years of age, further research is needed in this regard. The results also emphasize the importance of further research into the use of prenatal calcium and zinc supplementation in a US population."
