Migraine and Headache

General Information

NEWS:

Belly Fat May Make Migraines More Likely

Children Can Outgrow Chronic Daily Headache

Hot weather a migraine 'trigger' “A hot day can spell bad news for migraine sufferers, increasing their risk of an attack the next day, US research suggests. The risk went up by 7.5% for every five degree Celsius increase in temperature revealed the study of more than 7,000 patients, published in Neurology. The same applied to people who suffer from non-migraine headaches too. “

Link Between Migraines And Reduced Breast Cancer Risk Confirmed

Menstrual migraine pattern may start in adolescence “These findings suggest the migraine related with menstruation begins before the onset of menstruation, "which implies that menstrually related migraine is a hormonal event sensitive to the fluctuations in hormonal levels that can precede menstruation," Hershey's team concludes.”

Migraine Patients Who Experience Aura May Have A Two-Fold Increased Risk For Ischemic Stroke “Migraine with aura is often characterized by visual disturbances such as flashes of light, zigzagging patterns or even blind spots, which are then followed by a migraine attack. A migraine aura may sometimes also present with other sensations, such as numbness or tingling in parts of the body and speech problems.[ii] Results of the studies are being presented this week at the 14th International Headache Congress (IHC) hosted in Philadelphia by the American Headache Society (AHS). The authors also found that the increased risk among migraineurs with aura was further magnified for migraineurs less than 45, smokers and women using oral contraception.”

MIGRAINE RAISES RISK OF MOST COMMON FORM OF STROKE

Migraine ‘aura’ tied to long-term brain damage “Migraine headaches suffered by one in 10 women may inflict long-term damage to a part of the brain important to coordination and the senses, researchers said on Tuesday. Lesions in the brain's cerebellum were prevalent in nearly one-quarter of older women who were afflicted in middle age by migraine headaches that were accompanied by an "aura," they said. The aura is experienced as flashing lights, zig-zag lines or loss of vision before the painful, debilitating headaches strike. More than 10 percent of women experience the aura and another 7 percent have migraines without an aura. “

Migraines and mood disorders may be connected “It may be that a common environmental or genetic factor influences both migraines and mood/anxiety disorders, they suggest. A causal relationship may also exist between mental disorders and migraines, they add, noting that this study and others found that anxiety often precedes migraine, which often precedes depression.”

More Evidence on the Bipolar-Migraine Connection

Nasal spray may trigger migraine “People with hay fever -- more accurately termed allergic rhinitis -- may find themselves with a migraine after they use a nasal steroid spray to relieve their stuffy noses.”

PTSD Common in Migraine Patients: Study “"Physical or sexual abuse was reported by 42.2% of all migraineurs in the present study," Dr. Peterlin, director of the Drexel University College of Medicine Headache Clinic in Philadelphia, noted in an email to Reuters Health. In addition, a total of 64.9% of migraineurs with PTSD reported physical or sexual abuse. In women, Dr. Peterlin pointed out, the lifetime prevalence of PTSD is twice that of men. "Despite the clinical perception that military combat is the most common etiology, the most common causes of PTSD are interpersonal traumas, including sexual abuse," the researcher said.”
