Colorectal CancerGeneral InformationNEWS:High Vitamin D Levels Linked to Lower Risk of Colon Cancer “High blood levels of vitamin D are associated with a lower risk of colon cancer, finds a large European study published online in the British Medical Journal. The risk was cut by as much as 40% in people with the highest levels compared with those in the lowest.” ARTICLES:JOURNAL ARTICLES:Association between pre-diagnostic circulating vitamin D concentration and risk of colorectal cancer in European populations:a nested case-control study. (BMJ. 2010) “CONCLUSIONS: The results of this large observational study indicate a strong inverse association between levels of pre-diagnostic 25-(OH)D concentration and risk of colorectal cancer in western European populations. Further randomised trials are needed to assess whether increases in circulating 25-(OH)D concentration can effectively decrease the risk of colorectal cancer.” Association of smoking and flat adenomas: results from an asymptomatic population screened with a high-definition colonoscope. (Gastrointest Endosc. 2010) Epidemiology of vitamin D and colorectal cancer: Casual or causal link? (J Steroid Biochem Mol Biol. 2010) Long-term survival in young adults with colorectal cancer: a population-based study. (Dis Colon Rectum. 2010) Metabolic syndrome is associated with colorectal cancer in men. (Eur J Cancer. 2010) Multivitamins Don't Reduce Colon Cancer Death Risk "This study adds to a growing body of research that questions the purported benefit of multivitamin use, and it underscores the need to investigate the use of individual vitamins, such as vitamin D, which may, in fact, provide real benefit," study senior author Dr. Charles Fuchs, director of gastrointestinal oncology at Dana-Farber, said in a news release from the institute.” Plasma 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Levels and the Risk of Colorectal Cancer: The Multiethnic Cohort Study (Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention 2010) “In summary, this study provides evidence of an association between vitamin D status and reduced risk of colorectal cancer in an ethnically diverse population.” |
