Heart Failure On The Rise For Men Who Can't Sleep “Researchers found that men who have the most severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) have a 58 percent increased risk of developing heart failure and those same men ages 40 to 70 have a 68 percent higher risk of getting coronary heart disease. Researchers defined severe obstructive sleep apnea as an average of 30 or more breathing interruptions in a single hour of sleep. During OSA, the airways collapse and which often leaves the patient struggling to breathe. “
