Resveratrol May Prevent Breast Cancer “Resveratrol, a nutrient found in red wine, keeps estrogen from causing breast cancer in test-tube studies. Prolonged exposure to estrogen is a major risk factor for breast cancer. Most research has focused on the interactions between estrogen and estrogen receptors on breast cancer cells. But when the body's system for processing estrogen gets out of balance, dangerous estrogen metabolites appear. These toxic compounds react with DNA in breast cells and jump-start the growth of tumors. “

Menopause

Postmenopausal breast cancer risk and cumulative number of menstrual cycles. (Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev. 2005) "CONCLUSION: Among women who underwent natural menopause, a higher number of menstrual cycles in lifetime, reflecting a longer exposure to endogenous estrogens, is associated with an increased breast cancer risk."

Environmental Health

Breast cancer risk and exposure in early life to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons using total suspended particulates as a proxy measure. (Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev. 2005) "Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are ubiquitous in the environment. We hypothesized that early life exposure to PAHs may have particular importance in the etiology of breast cancer. ? Our study suggests that exposure in early life to high levels of PAHs may increase the risk of postmenopausal breast cancer; however, other confounders related to geography cannot be ruled out."

Risk Factors

A family history of breast cancer will not predict female early onset breast cancer in a population-based setting. (BMC Cancer. 2008)

Risk Factors for the Incidence of Breast Cancer: Do They Affect Survival From the Disease? (Journal of Clinical Oncology 2008) “Conclusion: The apparent benefit of alcohol intake has not been described before, and our data need to be interpreted with some caution. However, our finding that an increase in BMI is associated with a poorer prognosis supports previously published data and suggests that advice on weight loss should be given to all obese patients with breast cancer. “
