Cancer: Melanoma

Tanning Beds, Sunlamps, and Risk of Cutaneous Malignant Melanoma (Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers & Prevention 2005) "Conclusions: Results indicate a significantly increased risk of cutaneous melanoma subsequent to sunbed/sunlamp exposure."

Vitamin: D

VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY AND SEASONAL VARIATION IN AN ADULT SOUTH FLORIDA POPULATION. (J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 2005) "Hypovitaminosis D is associated with impaired neuromuscular function, bone loss, and fractures. If a person is not taking a vitamin supplement, sun exposure is often the greatest source of vitamin D. Thus, vitamin D deficiency is not uncommon in the winter, particularly in northern latitudes. ... The prevalence of hypovitaminosis D is considerable even in southern latitudes and should be taken into account in the evaluation of postmenopausal and male osteoporosis."

General Information

Topical application of green and white tea extracts provides protection from solar-simulated ultraviolet light in human skin. (Exp Dermatol. 2009) “RESULTS: Topical application of green and white tea offered protection against detrimental effects of UV on cutaneous immunity. Such protection is not because of direct UV absorption or sunscreen effects as both products showed a sun protection factor of 1. There was no significant difference in the levels of protection afforded by the two agents. Hence, both green tea and white tea are potential photoprotective agents that may be used in conjunction with established methods of sun protection.”
